Dr. Hannes Adomeit (†) was a political scientist specializing in Russian foreign policy and military affairs. He is at present Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel (ISPK).
Hannes Adomeit (1942-2022) was born in Memel, now Klaipeda in Lithuania. He studied political science at the Freie Universität in Berlin and at Columbia University in New York, where he was awarded a Ph.D. 'with distinction'.
Until 2007, he served as Senior Research Associate on Russia and Eurasia at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Berlin. From 2007 until 2014, he was Professor for Russian and East European Studies at the Natolin (Warsaw) campus of the College of Europe.
In research and teaching, he has dealt with the collapse of the Soviet Union and German unification as professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston and Research Fellow at Harvard University’s Russian Research Center in Cambridge, Mass.
Adomeit has authored or co-authored several books and articles in leading journals. A noteworthy example of the former is Imperial Overstretch: Germany in Soviet Policy from Stalin to Gorbachev. An Analysis Based on New Archival Evidence, Memoirs, and Interviews 2nd ed. (Baden-Baden: Nomos, 2016).
